Frequently Asked Questions

1. What services does Drive Smart offer?
We offer teen driver education, adult 6-hour courses, DPS-authorized road tests, private driving lessons, bilingual services, and an optional DPS Upload service.

2. Are you DPS-authorized to give the road test?
Yes. Drive Smart is a DPS-authorized Third Party Skills Testing (TPST) location, allowing you to take your driving test with us instead of going to the DPS.

3. Do I still have to go to the DPS after taking my road test with Drive Smart?
If you choose our DPS Upload option, you do not need to go to the DPS again. We handle the upload, and the DPS mails your license directly to your home. If you do not choose the upload, you must take your sealed envelope and required documents to the DPS to complete the issuance process.

4. What documents do I need to bring for my road test?
For Teens:
Teens must bring their learner permit that shows they are 16 and have held it for 6 months, their Teen Impact Video certificate, and their DE-964 that states “FOR DRIVER LICENSE ONLY.” A parent or legal guardian must be present.
If choosing the DPS Upload option, teens must also bring the DL-14B form filled out.
For Adults:
Adults must bring their restricted B license and their Impact Video certificate.
If under 25, adults must also bring their Adult 6-Hour Course completion certificate.

We will email you a checklist before your appointment.

5. Do you offer the road test in Spanish?
Yes. We offer Spanish-language road tests and have bilingual staff available.

6. How do I schedule or reschedule a road test?
All appointments are scheduled through our website.
To reschedule, you must text the location where your test was originally scheduled:
Carrollton: 972-325-6214
The Colony: 972-246-8363

7. What happens if I’m late to my road test?
If you are more than 5 minutes late, do not show, or do not give 24-hour notice when rescheduling, there is a $35 rescheduling fee. The appointment will need to be rebooked.

8. Do you provide the vehicle for the road test?
Yes. We provide a fully insured school vehicle for all road tests unless you are authorized to use your own.
Personal vehicles must have valid registration, current insurance, and all signals and the horn must function properly.

9. What is included in the adult 6-hour course?
The course includes the required classroom instruction, the written test, and full guidance on the steps to obtain your license afterward.

10. When can my teen start driver education?
Teens can begin classroom instruction at 14 and a half, but we recommend starting at 15, since they cannot obtain their permit until they turn 15.

11. How long does the teen driving program take?
The Texas teen program requires 24 hours of classroom instruction and 44 behind-the-wheel practice hours (instructor and parent-taught combined).
The timeline varies based on how the student schedules their driving lessons.
We recommend planning for a minimum of 6 months, as teens must hold their permit for 6 months and be 16 to take their road test.

12. Do you offer payment plans?
We offer a payment plan for the Full Teen Course only. The balance must be paid by the third week of class. No other payment plans are available.

13. What safety measures do you take?
Safety is our top priority. All Drive Smart locations are equipped with security cameras, and our school vehicles also have in-car cameras to ensure a safe, monitored environment for both students and instructors. We maintain strict operational standards to keep every learning experience safe, supervised, and professional.

14. How long have you been in the community?
Drive Smart has served the community for over 10 years and brings more than 20 years of experience in the driver-education industry.
